Eventually, you will receive all feature updates through Windows Update latest version. Microsoft is distributing these updates in batches, so you may not get them right away. When the time is right, a message will appear informing you that an important update is pending.
You can also start the download manually, although Microsoft has tweaked it a bit. In the past, simply click the Check for Updates button in Settings> Updates and Security> Windows Update to download the latest version. However, due to violent launches in the past, Windows will now display a separate prompt asking if you want to upgrade to the latest feature update.
You will not see this message unless the latest updates are installed. To make it easier, go to the Windows 10 download page and click ” Update Now” to get an applet that will start downloading.
Just be sure to take precautions before updating Windows 10.
May 2020 update
Let’s take a look at the best new features in 2004, the latest at the time of writing.
Reinstall Windows 10 Cloud
With the May 2020 Update, reinstalling Windows is much easier. Previously, when you wanted to restore factory settings or update Windows , the process used the operating system files on your computer. You can now select the cloud download option to reinstall Windows from the Internet.
This means you save time by updating to the latest version of Windows 10 and reinstalling it at the same time. This will be useful even if a normal reinstallation fails due to damaged or similar files.
Separate optional updates in Windows Update
When you visit Windows Update, under Settings> Update & Security, you’ll see a See Additional Updates link under the Check for Updates button .
Security updates that Microsoft recommends installing immediately will continue to come through regular Windows updates. These additional updates will include non-essential drivers, minor quality updates, and even feature updates for Windows 10 in the first release.
This makes it easy to separate critical updates from those that don’t matter much, and also know where to go for further updates if you want.
Revised Cortana UI
Cortana update for Windows 10 May 2020
Starting with the 2004 version, Windows 10 now lets you drag and drop the Cortana window like any other app. Open it by searching or using the Cortana icon in the taskbar.
In particular, you can now interact with Cortana by typing in the chat window instead of talking. Cortana still has many of the same features, including opening apps, setting reminders, and checking your calendar.
If you’ve been a powerful user of Cortana in the past, you might be disappointed to learn that Microsoft has removed some features in this update. It can no longer interact with smart home devices or connect to your favorite music service. You will also see that Windows 10 recommends that you sign in with an enterprise or school account for the best experience with Cortana.
This could be a good move since Cortana hasn’t been as popular as Alexa or Google Assistant in the past. Focusing more on productivity will distract the helper.
Windows Subsystem for Linux version 2 latest version
Microsoft has made great strides in providing some of the Linux features for Windows 10. We’ve shown you how to run the Linux desktop on your Windows PC using the Windows Subsystem for Linux feature.
In the May 2020 update, this feature is being updated to version 2. It uses the real Linux kernel for true interoperability, which is updated through Windows Update. Microsoft claims that this will result in much better performance when using this feature.
While regular users may not care about this feature, it’s a fun development for cross-platform users and anyone interested in Linux.
Windows 10 Task Manager improvements
The good old Task Manager has put together a few useful tricks in the latest update. Visit his Performance tab to check it out.
Specifically, for each record on the disk, you will see an SSD or HDD to see what type of media it is. While you may have found this information elsewhere on Windows earlier, it is more convenient here. It’s easy to check if you are helping a friend work on his computer or forget which drive you have.
Go to the GPU card (if you have a dedicated graphics card) and you will see the new GPU temperature range . This gives you an easy way to see how hot your GPU is so as not to damage it from overuse. Check out our guide on PC operating temperatures for more information.
Access without password
The latest update for Windows 10 includes a toggle that forces you to use the Windows Hello sign-in option instead of a password for any Microsoft account on your device.
Go to Settings> Accounts> Sign In Options and turn on the toggle under Request access to Windows Hello for Microsoft accounts . To do this, you need to use one of the above methods on the same page, for example, a PIN or a fingerprint.
Windows 10 requires Windows Hello
If you don’t know, using a PIN to sign in to Windows 10 is better for security because the PIN is local to that device. Someone who stole your PIN can only use it to sign in to your computer, while they can use your Microsoft account password to sign in to your email, Skype, Xbox, and other accounts.
Since fingerprint or face identification requires special hardware, a PIN is recommended in most cases. This method works with any device and is easier to type than your Microsoft Advanced Password.
